When a master weaver friend donated to me a 4-shaft floor loom I was so excited!
As someone fortunate to have travelled to places where hand woven cloth is produced I am fascinated by the limitless possibilites of colour, pattern and texture in textiles and, after a couple of years of trial and error and some help from the local Guild, I found how to express my style using the underappreciated artform that is hand woven cloth.
As a geologist by training my eye is constantly looking for patterns in the landscape, its colours and textures and I try to apply this to observation of nature into what I weave creating textile pieces that allude to memories, ideas, places and things. This means they are unique and often quite personal.
I am a member of the Handweaver’s, Spinner’s and Dyer’s Guild of West Australia. If you are interested in learning more about any of this we are always happy to see newcomers!
Inspiration & results
A trip to Iceland meant amazing skies and stunning scenery. I resolved to encapsulate expressions of memories in textiles and make beautiful, lasting impressions of them. I decided to master using cashmere for the beauty and softness of the yarn.
The cashmere shawl on the right created something wearable that reflected the colours of that moment and the memories it made. If you have an idea for something like this I would love to help you create it.
